The Institute of Distance and Open Learning is working under Guwahati University. It was established in 1998. It was formally called the Post Graduate Communications School (PGCS).

The University of IDOL Guwahati has 4 Bachelor's degrees, 16 PG and 8 PG Diploma programmes. The selection will take place on the basis of merit under BCA, B.Sc., BA and B.Com. Gauhati University provide a distance learning platform to students with its branch called IDOL GU. Student of any stream can apply for admission to bachelor of arts course after earning the 12th certification form any recognised school. IDOL GU BA admission process will start in June - July. Gauhati University (idolgu)offers the FOSS Digital Classroom. It is started with free and open-source software (FOSS). The University has implemented 100 computers that are connected with a campus LAN and a virtual Digital Learning Environment is created using FOSS Technology. 

The University provides a digital library that provides current 6500 books and nine bibliographic databases, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, etc. The University has introduced the IVR system (Interactive Voice Responds) with a Toll-free service in the year 2011.
