Dinabandhu Andrews College was established in 1956 by an order of the Indian government and a subsequent decree from the West Bengal government. The college bears the name of the noted educator Rev. Charles Freer Andrews (1871-1940),a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi who had immigrated to India from England as a Christian missionary and who later became associated with the cause of social reforms and India's independence.

A significant turning point in the college's history occurred in 2000 with the introduction of post-graduate zoology instruction, which was approved jointly by the University of Calcutta and the Director of Public Instructions, Government of West Bengal. Also starting in 2006 was a post-graduate programme in electrical science. In West Bengal, post-graduate level instruction was first offered at this non-government college.
