GCELT Kolkata Admission: The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India, established on March 11, 1919, by the British after World War I. It is managed by the Directorate of Technical Education and the Department of Higher Education of West Bengal. Initially, the college focused on teaching and research in Leather Technology, Footwear, and Leather Goods production. It also helped industries by providing training and organizing workshops to share knowledge with people working in these fields.

Over time, the college expanded its courses to include modern subjects. In 2000, it introduced a B.Tech course in Information Technology, followed by another B.Tech course in Computer Science and Engineering in 2001. By 2005, the college added an M.Tech program in Leather Technology. This shows how the college has grown by adding new courses while continuing its focus on its original areas of expertise.
