Samaritan College of Nursing, Pazhanganad, Admission: Samaritan Hospital, started in 1968, is a well-known Catholic hospital in India run by the “Sisters of the Destitute.” In 1999, it became part of the Samaritan Medical Care Association, a registered charitable society. The hospital performed the first open-heart surgery in Kerala in 1972, but the service stopped in 1983 because it was too costly to run in a rural area and government hospitals began offering similar care. In 1975, the hospital started plans for a Nursing School, received approval from the Nursing Council in December, and held interviews for students soon after.
