Loreto College, Kolkata, admission:  Loreto College, Calcutta, was started in 1912 by the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Catholic group founded in 1609. It played an important role in women’s education in India. At first, the college helped school girls prepare privately for university exams. Soon, it became one of the first women’s colleges to be officially connected to the University of Calcutta. This allowed its students to take university exams in subjects like arts, science, and teaching. Loreto College was special because it combined different courses, giving young women the chance to study subjects like biology and Indian languages, which were usually only available to boys at that time.
