IPGMER Kolkata Admission: The first hospital in Calcutta, built in 1707 on the grounds of the Old Fort, was initially called Presidency Hospital and later renamed Presidency General Hospital. It started as a single-story building for Europeans but eventually opened its doors to non-European patients in 1770. After India’s independence, it was renamed Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital (SSKM Hospital) in 1954 to honor a major donor. In 1957, it became the first Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India and was officially named The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER). Established by Jawahar Lal Nehru, it grew into a leading center for medical education and advanced research, offering courses at all levels, including nursing, paramedical, and specialized medical degrees.

Over the years, IPGMER expanded into a multi-superspecialty hospital, adding advanced departments like neurology, cardiology, and neonatal care. New facilities such as the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry, and a Human Milk Bank were introduced. It also began offering undergraduate medical courses, physiotherapy, and nursing programs at school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. Today, IPGMER is recognized as a premier institution for medical education and cutting-edge research, often referred to as the "Bethlehem of advanced medical research." Its growth has made it a cornerstone of healthcare and learning in India.
