IPGMER, Kolkata, Admission: In 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was built at the Old Fort by the Council of Fort William. It was called Presidency Hospital and was made for Europeans. At first, it was a small single-story building. In 1768, two more buildings were added on Lower Circular Road, and it became a larger hospital known as Presidency General Hospital. On April 2, 1770, the hospital started accepting non-European patients too. For many years, it was called PG Hospital, but in 1954, it was renamed Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital (SSKM Hospital) to honor a generous donor named Sukhlal Karnani.
