GCEW, Coimbatore Admission: The Government College of Education for Women in Coimbatore is one of the top government teacher training institutions in Tamil Nadu. It was started on August 8, 1956, to train women teachers after India gained independence. The college began with just 75 students and 7 teachers, and Mrs. N. Shanmugasundaram was the first Principal. Over the years, the college has grown and now offers B.Ed., M.Ed., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs. It has been approved by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) since 1997 and has trained many teachers who now serve across the state.
