The university was established in 2022 by the Assam Government under Act No. XLVII as a State Private University. It operates under the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.

The university grew out of the efforts of two well-known institutions: the Girijananda Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT) and the Girijananda Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (GIPS). These institutes have been providing quality professional education for the past 16 years with a focus on helping society. Their commitment to excellence has been recognized through accreditations from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and grants from organizations like AICTE and DST.
