When the initial seed of this medical college's establishment was planted in November 1969, it was like a dream come true for the residents of Uttar Pradesh's easternmost district, Purvanchal. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Late Shri Chandra Bhanu Gupta laid the building's cornerstone.

It was named in honour of committed liberation warrior Baba Raghav Das, a well-known Sarvoday Leader in this region and a close friend of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Mahatma Gandhi. Under the active direction of Prof. P.L. Shukla, the first principal of this college, the teaching first began at government polytechnics and eventually moved to college and hospital facilities.

On August 7, 1972, the first group of medical school applicants was admitted. This college has since expanded and is now offering postgraduate-PG programmes in a number of specialities. The administrative block, the central library, the examination hall, the auditorium, the lecture halls, and numerous departments of paraclinical and nonclinical medical education are all included in the BRD Medical College.
