The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) is a legalised body also known by the name of Central Council.  Formed under the Pharmacy Act, 1948, this body is regulated by the government. The council was first established on 4th March 1948. The Central government represents the Pharmacy Council of India in every five years. The headquarter of the Pharmacy Council of India is in New Delhi. PCI has some connection with the Ministry of Health Services and Family Welfare. Elected members, Nominated members and Ex-Officio members are three kinds of representatives that constitute a framework. The members of PCI is not only limited to one constituency. Such members belong from diverse constituencies such as:-

  • Central Government
  • Medical Council of India
  • State Pharmacy of Councils
  • University Grants Commission
  • State Government and Union Territories
  • Director-General of Health Services
  • All India Council for Technical Education

Purpose of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) provides a progressive approach to practise pharmacy in India. Some standards of education have been laid down to become a successful pharmacist. It is necessary to meet the above standard to gain mastery over pharmacy. The acknowledgement of courses and examinations in the curriculum of Pharmacy is also important. It also accepts overseas qualifications if found appropriate as per their norms. The record of people who have registered with the Pharmacy Council of India is maintained on a large scale. 

Roles of Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)

  • To acknowledge the medical degree given outside the region to which the Pharmacy act stretches ie, acknowledging foreign degree.
  • To acknowledge the medical training academy and the courses for which examination is conducted. 
  • To guarantee even educational regulations in India.
  • To check the medical academy thoroughly to monitor whether the act is functioning according to the norms or not.
  • To leave the course if it fails to function according to the educational norms.
  • To manage the record of pharmacists.
